The Mixing and Dosing Process

Mixing is a critical step in preparing nutritionally balanced animal feed — precise dosing and homogeneous blending of components (grains, proteins, premixes, vitamins) ensures consistent and stable quality in every batch.

Why is precise mixing critical for animal feed?

Animal feed consists of dozens of components in precisely defined ratios — grains, soy meal, fish meal, vitamins, minerals and premixes. Non-uniform mixing means some animals receive too little of essential nutrients while others receive too much.

An industrial mixer guarantees a coefficient of variation (CV) below 5% — every granule contains an identical proportion of all components. The MDK system automatically doses all components gravimetrically, eliminating human error.

1

Gravimetric dosing

The MDK system measures and delivers the exact weight of each component to the scale

2

Filling the Mixer

Measured components fall into the batch mixer

3

Mixing 2–5 minutes

Spirals or paddles ensure homogeneous mixing in a short time

4

Discharge and transport

The finished blend goes to the pellet mill, extruder or directly to packaging

🔑 Key advantages of mixing and dosing

  • Guaranteed homogeneity CV ≤ 5% for every batch
  • Automatic gravimetric dosing — no manual measuring
  • Precise micro-component dosing (vitamins, amino acids)
  • Full batch records — recipe traceability
  • Easy recipe changes without stopping the production line
  • Integration with PLC line control system
  • Minimising losses of expensive premixes

Where is the mixing process used?

Mixing is the central process in all animal feed and premix facilities.

🐄
Animal feed for cattle and pigs
Mixing of flour, soy meal, minerals and premixes for complete rations for cattle, pigs and sheep.
Cattle Pigs Sheep
🐔
Poultry Feed and Starter
Precise dosing of proteins and amino acids for poultry. Starter blends require CV ≤ 3%.

Premixes and feed additives
Vitamins, minerals, amino acids and additives are dosed in microgram amounts and mixed into a carrier for uniform distribution.

Key parameters of the mixing process

📊
Coefficient of variation (CV)
≤ 5 %
CV ≤ 5% is the industry standard for animal feed. Poultry premixes require CV ≤ 3%.
⏱️
Mixing time
2–5 min
Horizontal spiral mixer achieves homogeneity in 2–3 minutes. Vertical mixers require 8–15 minutes.
⚖️
Dosing accuracy
±0,1 %
Gravimetric dosing by the MDK system. Manual dosing achieves ±2–5%, which is insufficient for premixes.
🔢
Number of components
Do 16
The MDK system can simultaneously dose up to 16 different components in one batch.
🏋️
Batch capacity
200–3.000 kg
Batch size is selected according to line capacity. 3–5 batches per hour is recommended.
Energy consumption
3–8 kWh/t
Mixing is the most energy-efficient step in the line — it consumes far less than the mill or pellet mill.
