Oil Pressing Process

Oil pressing is a mechanical process for extracting vegetable oils from seeds without the use of chemical solvents. The result is high-quality cold-pressed or hot-pressed oils and protein cakes.

Cold vs. hot pressing — differences and applications

Cold pressing is a process in which seed is pressed without pre-heating, at temperatures below 40°C. The oil retains all natural antioxidants, vitamins and aroma. Yield is somewhat lower (30–40%) but oil quality is premium.

Hot pressing involves prior thermal preparation of seed (up to 100°C), which increases oil yield (45–55%) but partially reduces the content of heat-sensitive nutrients. Ideal for industrial use and animal feed from the cake.

🔑 Key advantages of oil pressing

  • No chemical solvents — natural, clean process
  • Dual income stream: oil + protein cake for animal feed
  • High market value of cold-pressed oil
  • Low energy consumption compared to chemical extraction
  • Compact machines — suitable for small and medium facilities
  • Kratko vreme povratka investicije
  • Cake contains 30–45% protein — valuable for livestock

Raw materials suitable for pressing

Almost any seed or kernel with high oil content can be processed by mechanical pressing.

🌻
Sunflower and rapeseed
High oil content (40–50%) and good cake for animal feed. The most commonly processed raw materials in Serbia.
Sunflower Rapeseed Mustard

Soy and legumes
Lower oil content (18–22%) but an exceptionally valuable protein cake (40–45% protein) for animal feed.
Soy Peanut Flaxseed

Key oil pressing parameters

💧
Seed moisture
6–9 %
Dry seed gives better yield. High moisture causes foaming and poor separation of oil from cake.
🌡️
Pressing temperature
≤40 / 60–100°C
Cold ≤40°C for premium oil. Hot 60–100°C for higher yield and industrial use.
📊
Oil yield
30–55 %
Depends on raw material and method. Sunflower 40–50%, soy 18–22%, rapeseed 38–48%.
🧱
Residual Oil in Cake
3–12 %
Cold pressing leaves 7–12% oil in the cake. Hot pressing reduces the residual to 3–6%.
Energy consumption
15–40 kWh/t
Mechanical pressing is the most energy-efficient of all oil extraction methods.
🏋️
Proteins in cake
30–45 %
Soy cake contains 40–45% protein — ideal for premixes and animal feed concentrates.
