Oil pressing is a mechanical process for extracting vegetable oils from seeds without the use of chemical solvents. The result is high-quality cold-pressed or hot-pressed oils and protein cakes.
Cold pressing is a process in which seed is pressed without pre-heating, at temperatures below 40°C. The oil retains all natural antioxidants, vitamins and aroma. Yield is somewhat lower (30–40%) but oil quality is premium.
Hot pressing involves prior thermal preparation of seed (up to 100°C), which increases oil yield (45–55%) but partially reduces the content of heat-sensitive nutrients. Ideal for industrial use and animal feed from the cake.
| Specification | Cold pressing | Hot pressing |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | ≤ 40 °C | 60–100 °C |
| Oil yield | 30–40% | 45–55% |
| Oil quality | Premium, raw | Industrial |
| Cake | 7–12% residual oil | 3–6% residual oil |
| Cake application | Animal feed | Animal feed / biomass |
Almost any seed or kernel with high oil content can be processed by mechanical pressing.
